My house was built in 1950 and still has many of the original building materials. One item in particular is a odd storm door. The frame of the door is wood, but instead of the usual glass window and screen, the door has a plantation shutter look with a screen behind it. Inside the door is a handle where one can open, open half way or close the louvers on the door. I want to change the color of the aluminum louver part of the door and leave the door frame white.

Here’s my dilemma, over the years the louver part of the door has developed a layer of dust and it looks dirty. This dust is not your usual get out the feather duster and voila!, the dust is gone. The front of the house gets the evening sun and over the years dust and/or pollen has baked the dust on. It’s going to need some elbow grease.

Most articles I’ve read state using plain old water and detergent to clean, but if I do that and the door doesn’t quickly dry, the first states of rust could set in. Also here are 32 louvers on the door and if I get just one of the opening/closing mechanism wet it could cause rust and the door is ruined, as all the louvers have to operate to open and close the louvers.

Any suggestions on cleaning products other than water?

Aluminum doesn’t rust. You can use all the water you want on the louvers and they will be fine. I suggest you clean it with a strong detergent such as Simple Green. You can talk to they guys at any auto parts store about paint that will work on the louvers.
